'Prometheus' is Ridley Scott's own prequel to his original classic 'Alien' and it explores themes of creation and death. It is slightly more complex than the more straightforward narratives of the other 'Alien' films; however, it is a great example of what Scott can do in a science fiction film.

Noomi Rapace acts as Elizabeth Shaw, an archaeologist from Earth who seeks to know the origins of the world. Along with her partner Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green), they join an expedition crew on a ship called 'Prometheus' where they follow coordinates to a planet in which Shaw and Holloway believe they can find their answers. However on this journey, they are oblivious to the horrors which await them.

Tensions begin to rise when the crew discover strange (ovomorph-esque) objects inside a mountainous area along with the corpse of an unidentified body. The narrative from here splits, seeing many of the crew have their own plots laid out. Shaw looks into what this corpse is and David (Michael Fassbender) is an inquisitive android who looks into the egg shaped objects discovered in the strange room.

The performances all round are generally good. Fassbender easily is the best out of all the cast, brilliantly epitomising what an android is like. Idris Elba, the captain, although playing a minor supporting role in the film, is another excellent actor. Rapace is on the whole decent, some scenes being better than others. The worst actor is probably Marshall Green as Holloway- his character is annoying and soon becomes expendable. The rest of the cast depict their character well and in a way which helps progress the film.

The plot itself is intriguing and exciting. As in the other 'Alien' films, there is some exposition for the mission brief and looking into characters. Once the story gets into full swing, the pace picks up and it gets more exhilarating with some unpredictable events occurring. Near the end of the film, there are some obvious links to the original 'Alien' film, although there are still unanswered questions and some things remain ambiguous or confusing. There is lots up for interpretation or deeper analysis. The end of the film isn't necessarily unsatisfying, but some things seem perplexing and need to be examined to make more sense.

Ultimately, this film is a good prequel to 'Alien'; however there should be no expectation for it to be identical in concept to the franchise- that is not the purpose of the movie. It is a good science fiction film, with good direction from Scott with questions still remaining at the end which could lead to additional viewings or research into the film.

Verdict: 8/10
