An action film on the dangers of time travel, 'Looper' is a thrilling and thought-provoking movie which takes a more logical approach to how time travel might work in the future and some of its disastrous consequences.

Joe is a Looper- he kills people, sent from the future, back in time for their crimes. The job is quick and simple, until he comes face to face with his own future self, which he can't bring himself to eliminate. This is a dangerous, incriminating thing to happen and puts himself in jeopardy.

Gordon-Levitt's character is being hunted by mobsters for his crime, while also being conscious of his future self (Bruce Willis) who has set up his own agenda of what he wants to do while in the past which will subsequently change his present for the better. The plot seems complex and convoluted, but in a similar way to how Christopher Nolan handled 'Inception', it is easy to follow and excellently directed by Johnson (who is also the director of 'The Last Jedi' in December 2017).
Time travel is looked at in a logical way in 'Looper' because it shows how dangerous and life changing it could be. Too much would be put at risk if time travel was invented and the film explores this. Like events which happen in 'Back to the Future', single actions could change the course of history and this is portrayed very well here.

The acting is superb here. Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis look strikingly similar (a good casting decision) and their performances are convincing and well done. Emily Blunt as the paranoid mother Sara is great; however, her storyline comes into play further along into the film.
Willis shows how he can still give great, action performances in the modern day, despite his age and his action scenes are all excellent and enthralling. Both him and Gordon-Levitt show struggles they have with both of them being in the same time period and their emotional expression adds a though provoking and moving element to the film.

The biggest downfall for this film is the first act. Things start off slowly and the first few minutes are very exposition heavy, making it a bit of a dull watch. The film does get much more thrilling after this, but at the beginning, there seems to be a lot of confusion. All questions feel answered by the end, which is excellently done, very clever and somewhat unpredictable. But the exposition makes the film seem quite slow paced and dry.

Ultimately, this does become an exciting and brilliant science fiction action thriller. Once the  does pace pick up after an uninteresting beginning, it doesn't drop and the thrills go up almost exponentially.

Verdict: 8/10
